Blog 1- Anne-Marie Swift

Thursday 6th February 2020
Anne-Marie Swift, Business Consultant for the Women in Business Network
On Thursday mornings, Steve Rossington, the module leader for Science and Industry, organises guest speakers to come in and chat to Level 6 undergraduate students studying chemistry based degrees. On this particular Thursday morning, Anne-Marie Swift was our guest speaker.

Anne-Marie Swift is the profound owner of the international company Women in Business Network. She came into Salford university to hold an interactive seminar, with us final year students. She initiated the morning with introducing herself and what she does, and started to emphasis her first key point of preaching how important it is to have a science background to have a good chance of succeeding in the business world.
We then got a group activity to research a particular business person and how they started and become what they are today. My group chose to research Warren Buffet, the owner of coca cola. This activity in itself gave us practise of working within a team, a highly desired attribute for the business world. She asked us to give her one word of what we think is required to run a business. All these activities and questions Anne-Marie gave us, made our minds work in a way we never thought we could. Her approach to the seminar as a whole got our brains stimulated in a business mindset, that some of us didn’t even know we had that ability. Anne-Marie herself, has the attribute of bringing the best out of people, which shows what great leadership skills she has, hence her current success rate.
Anne-Marie then went on to tell us the 9 rules for success that she truly swore by:
  • Be business aware
  • Be market aware
  • Be strategic
  • The purpose of a business is to make money
  • Think for yourself
  • Connect with the language of profitability
  • Understand your strategy
  • Consider multiple streams of income
  • It’s not about YOU it's about the BUSINESS
Advice like this is truly priceless and ones to keep implanted at the back of our minds, for when we get the opportunity to join the industry.

A picture taken towards the end of the seminar, when she allowed members from the audience to ask any questions

To end the seminar, she stated “A way of thinking which see’s opportunity within problems and turning the opportunity into a business, an understanding that everything around us is the result of an executed idea”. Within a few hours, Anne-Marie changed my mindset into a business point of view buy these few words. Remarkable lady!
